Elder

Never bring the wood indoors,
but float the flower heads for two days
in a stone crock, then strain through a muslin bag,
wondering at the time it takes a ladleful

to melt through the wet cloth.
Sugared and left to ferment in the larder,
one forgotten bottle might blow its cork
while you lie with no ideas in the dark.
